    Mount Atago

    A challenging but rewarding hike up the tallest mountain surrounding Kyoto. The trail features steep inclines and declines but offers great views of Kyoto and the mountains beyond and a very serene temple right at the top. Starting in the Arashiyama district and finishing at the unique Hozukyo Station, which is perched on a bridge in the Katsura river valley.

    Getting There: From Downtown Kyoto:
    Take the Hankyu Line from Kawaramachi Station to Arashiyama Station. You will have to change at Katsura Station to the Hankyu-Arashiyama Line. [Google Maps]

    Take the JR San-In Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station (13 minutes). [Google Maps]
