    Kyoto - Hiei - Biwa

    A strenuous hike up Kyoto’s most sacred mountain, and the second tallest mountain surrounding Kyoto (after Atago). A popular walk for local experienced hikers, the top offers great views of Kyoto in the west and Biwa Lake in the east, along with the chance to explore the wonderful temple complex. You end by climbing down the opposite side heading towards like Biwa, but you can do the hike in either direction, as both starting and ending locations have convenient public transportation

    Getting There: From Downtown Kyoto:
    Take the Keihan Main Line from Sanjo Station or Gion-Shijo Station north to Demachiyanagi Station. From here, transfer to the Eizan Line to Shugakuin Station. [Google Maps]
    From Kyoto Station:
    Take Kyoto Bus (not Kyoto City bus) Number 17 from Kyoto station to Shugakuin Station [Google Maps] [Local Bus Timetable]
    Alternatively, you can walk to Shichijo Station station on the Keihan Main Line (about 15 minutes walk), and take the train to Demachiyanagi Station. From here, transfer to the Eizan Line to Shugakuin Station. [Google Maps]
